Rhein Medical, Inc. (St. Petersburg, FL), introduced the Rhein Injector Cartridge Loading Forceps. The surgeon uses the instrument to take a lens out of its case, place it in an open cartridge, and push it down as the cartridge’s wings close. When the forceps is closed, the surgeon uses its distal tips to push the lens down the barrel of the cartridge.
iVue SD-OCT
The iVue compact SD-OCT (Optovue, Inc., Fremont, CA) has received FDA 510(k) clearance. The iVue is the compact Fourier-domain version of the RTVue OCT (Optovue, Inc.) and offers the same scanning speed and resolution for retinal and corneal imaging. The device is delivered on a standard slit-lamp-style base that can be mounted on a small table, and it is reportedly ergonomic and simple for a fast workflow.
G-6 Gonio Lens
Volk Optical (Mentor, OH) has developed the G-6 Gonio Lens, which is designed with six mirrors equally aligned at 63° to provide a 360° view of the anterior segment. During examinations, two of the mirrors are aligned in the superior and inferior regions, and the remaining four mirrors provide a continuous view through the nasal and temporal regions. Users can quickly scan across mirrors without having to track where one view ends and the next begins, according to the company.
Optokinetic Drum
Richmond Products Inc. (Albuquerque, NM) introduced the new Optokinetic (OKN) Drum for testing nystagmus. When the OKN Drum is rotated 8 to 10 rpm, patients use their optokinetic reflex to follow its motion. The OKN Drum may also be used to estimate visual acuity. It is equivalent to a vision of count fingers when held at a distance of 3 to 5 ft, according to the company.
