Employee Satisfaction
Improve Your Practice’s Culture With Employee Satisfaction Surveys
By Elizabeth Holloway, COE, CPSS, PHR
We have all heard the saying, “The most valuable asset of any business is its people.” In eye care practices, we understand the importance of our employees because our staff is an extension of our physicians. Patients relate the customer service they receive from employees to the medical treatment they receive from physicians. We also know that our employees are important because they are typically our largest expense, especially when the costs of salaries and benefits are considered.
Refractive Surgery
Femtosecond Laser Restoration of Accommodation
By David Smadja, MD
The femtosecond laser has emerged as a revolutionary technology in the field of refractive surgery over the past decade, improving cornea-based procedures such as laser vision correction (eg, flap creation, SMILE) and laser-assisted keratoplasty. More recently, the femtosecond laser has been successfully applied to the crystalline lens to assist in cataract surgery. Presbyopia, which is defined as a gradual loss of accommodation, is believed to be due in large part to an increase in stiffness of the crystalline lens. Although different methods have been proposed to overcome the symptoms of presbyopia—such as addition of lenses, monovision, and multifocality—none of these aim to restore true accommodation to presbyopic eyes.
Eyes for Innovation
Optics Innovation: Symfony Extended Range of Vision IOL
By Daniel H. Chang, MD
Ophthalmology is a specialty blessed with a steady stream of innovative new products. Some of this innovation comes from physician-inventors and small startup companies, while other big ideas come from the research labs of major ophthalmic companies. We are fortunate that practicing ophthalmologists can play a role in each of these settings, helping to influence and guide the development of new technologies that can benefit our patients.
