Vyome Showcases Preclinical Data for First Topical Mycophenolate Eye Drop to Treat Uveitis

Vyome Holdings announced encouraging preclinical results for VT-1908, the first topical formulation of mycophenolate designed to treat uveitis, at the recent Annual Meeting of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
Steroids remain first-line therapy for uveitis but carry risks, including cataract formation and elevated IOP leading to glaucoma. A significant subset of patients is either non-responsive to steroids or unable to tolerate them, leaving few effective alternatives. According to Vyome, drug candidate VT-1908 aims to fill this gap with a topically administered, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory option. Mycophenolate, an established immunosuppressant in systemic use, has never before been formulated as an eye drop.
In a preclinical anterior uveitis model, which mirrors the most common clinical form of the disease, twice-daily VT-1908 eye drops:
Significantly reduced uveitis scores, indicating potent anti-inflammatory activity
Matched the efficacy of a clinically used steroid, suggesting potential as a steroid-sparing therapy
“These results are exciting because they demonstrate that VT-1908 can be as effective as a steroid without the associated complications,” said Dr. Shiladitya Sengupta, Vyome co-founder and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. “Many patients cannot tolerate steroids, and our findings offer hope for a breakthrough treatment.”
Vyome’s CEO Venkat Nelabhotla outlined the company’s next steps:
Phase 1/2 clinical trial planned for the second half of 2026
Initial focus on uveitis, with a longer-term strategy to position VT-1908 as a steroid replacement for a wide range of ocular inflammatory conditions, tapping into a market opportunity projected to exceed $20 billion globally
