THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL PHACO TECHNIQUE
By Detlef Uthoff, MD; Detlef Holland, MD; Joerg Foerster, MBA; and Markus Poelzl, MD
The Rock ‘n’ Roll phaco technique does not require the nucleus to be chopped or cracked. The technique’s name describes the special way the nucleus is turned 180º around its horizontal axis with the phaco tip, which is the key step in this method.
TREATMENT OF A WHITE TRAUMATIC CATARACT WITH THE FEMTOSECOND LASER
By Richard J. Mackool Jr, MD, and Richard Mackool, MD
Richard J. Mackool Jr, MD, uses a femtosecond laser to create the primary and secondary incisions and the capsulorhexis on a partially reabsorbed, white traumatic cataract. Next, the patient is transferred to the OR, where Richard Mackool, MD, performs the rest of the case.
A NEW ENDOTHELIAL KERATOPLASTY TECHNIQUE
By Amar Agarwal, FRCS
Dr. Agarwal demonstrates pre-Descemet endothelial keratoplasty (PDEK), which involves the transplantation of Descemet membrane, the endothelium, and Dua’s layer. A PDEK graft is harvested by the pneumatic dissection of the donor cornea through a type 1 big bubble. According to Dr. Agarwal, the technique, which does not require advanced equipment, results in early visual rehabilitation without interface changes. PDEK grafts can be harvested in donor eyes of all age groups.
COMBINED CATARACT AND MICROINVASIVE GLAUCOMA SURGERY
By John Berdahl, MD
Dr. Berdahl uses a femtosecond laser to assist in the cataract procedure and finishes the case with the implantation of the iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass Stent (Glaukos Corporation).
