Merlin Surgical System
Volk Optical (Mentor, OH) has introduced the Merlin Surgical System for noncontact vitreoretinal procedures. The Merlin mounts beneath the optical pathway of the surgical microscope, where it holds a noncontact lens in place to allow accurate positioning and focus control. The system’s rotational assembly moves the lens out of the surgical field when it is not in use. Merlin is designed with Volk’s ROLS∞ (Infinity) reinverter, which features mechanisms to set and lock the internal prism in the correct alignment.

Softec One IOL
Lenstec, Inc. (St. Petersburg, FL), has announced that the FDA has approved the company’s Softec One IOL. The Softec One is a C-loop, singlepiece hydrophilic acrylic IOL that replaces the natural crystalline lens following cataract removal in patients 21 years of age and older. The IOL’s uniplanar design and equal biconvex spherical optic allow surgeons to implant the lens with no regard to whether it is “right-side up,” according to the company. The Softec One’s design is based on Lenstec’s Softec HD IOL, which received FDA approval earlier this year.
