Innovations

Accutome Inc. (Malvern, PA) recently introduced a new line of Microincision Diamond Knives with enhanced sharpness for precise incisions. The new line includes 1.2- to 1.4-mm Trapezoid Diamond Keratomes for microincision procedures. Each Accutome knife is designed with a titanium handle. The company also offers care and handling training, as well as its Diamond Exchange Program, which allows customers to trade in larger diamond knives for the new microincision sizes. Customers with specific sizing needs are encouraged to place customized orders.

Marco Vision Diagnostic Systems
Marco (Jacksonville, FL) has introduced a new line of Vision Diagnostic Systems, consisting of the EPIC-2100 and TRS-2100 automated refraction systems. These devices are designed to reduce refraction time and significantly increase patient throughput. The systems allow their operators to control every step of their preferred examination routines from a convenient detachable console. Alternatively, the systems can memorize the entire process to further streamline it. The EPIC-2100 and TRS-2100 allow both the operator and the patient to remain seated during the entire refraction process. Another feature of the systems is split-prism cylinder refinement, which eliminates patient confusion by presenting two targets simultaneously, rather than sequentially. According to Marco, the Vision Diagnostic Systems also have been shown to reduce the rate of remakes, and they increase overall staff productivity. Although technologically advanced, the systems can be operated by a technician after a brief training period.

Technolas 217z Zyoptix System
Bausch & Lomb's (Rochester, NY) platform for customized wavefront-driven laser vision correction—the patented Technolas 217z Zyoptix System for Personalized Vision Correction—received FDA approval for use in the US on October 10, 2003. According to the company, the approval grants the system the widest treatment range of any customized laser treatment system in the US: up to -7.00 D of myopia with up to -3.00 D of astigmatism, and an MRSE less than or equal to -7.50 D.

The system has been available throughout Europe since 2001, and, according to the company, European surgeons have used it to perform approximately 100,000 personalized LASIK procedures. The platform includes the Technolas 217z excimer laser upgraded with the Zyoptix Diagnostic Workstation unit and Zylink treatment software.

ALLEGRETTO WAVE
Early last month, WaveLight Laser Technologie, AG (Erlangen, Germany), received FDA approval for the treatment of both myopia and hyperopia using the ALLEGRETTO WAVE excimer laser. The approval permits the treatment of myopia of up to -12.00 D with astigmatism of up to -6.00 D and hyperopia of up to +6.00 D with astigmatism of up to +5.00 D.

Lumenis Ltd. (Santa Clara, CA) is the exclusive distributor of the ALLEGRETTO WAVE in the US and most Asian, European, Latin American, and Middle Eastern countries, and the company will oversee US sales, marketing, and field service efforts. Lumenis reports that the retreatment rate for myopia and hyperopia at 6 months in US clinical trials was less than 0.5%; the retreatment rate for myopia at 1 year was 3.6%.
