  • evaporation and hydrates and lubricates the eye
  • Available in 10-mL bottles

Refresh Optive Advanced (Allergan, Inc.) is an over-the-counter artificial tear for patients with dry eye symptoms. According to the company, Refresh Optive Advanced is a lipidenhanced tear with the low blur and comfort of an aqueous tear. The product reportedly features a comprehensive, triple-action formulation that works on all three layers of the tear film to reduce tear evaporation and hydrate and lubricate the eye. It contains a lipid that the company says reinforces the lipid layer, hydrates and adds volume to the aqueous layer, and provides advanced lubrication and protection to the mucin layer. The tear also reportedly penetrates the surface to provide osmoprotection to the corneal epithelial cells against excessive salt levels. Due to its optimized lipid content, Refresh Optive Advanced does not separate, and patients therefore do not need to shake the bottle prior to use, according to the manufacturer. The product is available in 10-mL bottles.

Key Features

  • Drinkable alternative to the nutritional supplement used in AREDS
  • Formulation includes natural supplements for ocular health
  • Eliminates the multiple pill-related side effects associated with the AREDS vitamins

Insightful Solutions, LLC, developed OJO fortified eye care nectar under the direction of Jodi Luchs, MD, the founder and CEO of the company. The beverage is designed as an alternative to the nutritional supplement used in the Age-Related Eye Diseases Study (AREDS), which contains a high-dose combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, ß-carotene, and zinc. According to a news release, Dr. Luchs found that, despite the important therapeutic and preventive benefits of the AREDS vitamins, their multiple pill-related side effects made them intolerable to many eligible patients. OJO's formulation is based on the AREDS 1 and 2 studies and includes additional natural supplements that reportedly benefit ocular health. Like the AREDS vitamins, OJO is designed for people at risk for or currently suffering from eye disease.
